Lesson
Unusual subjects can be difficult to compose, but if they are asymmetric and complex, then there is likely lots of different possibilities for compositions.
What is notable about this one, is the overall shape of the flower was weak and lacking energy, but when moving in the details became evident.
I think it is a general habit for me to more closely examine the subjects with the most compelling overall shape - but maybe there is actually an inverse relationship there, i.e. ones with weak overall shapes may have compelling areas at a smaller scale.
I need to do a better job of engaging with the macro level. Seems some of the times when I am interested in that, I sort of pick arbitrary subjects or favor simpler ones. Whereas - for example in the wet tissue-like white flowers there may have been many compelling smaller scale shots.
One challenge is that many times there may not be anything compelling, e.g. with the peony hip shoot, and it can be kind of time consuming or easy to move on quickly if there is absolutely nothing within a certain period of time.
At the same time - it does seem offer a greater reward when something is found, since the results are more uncommon.
What probably helps is focusing on elements that have the potential to be complex and diverse, e.g. if you spot complex macro structures - even if the initial ones are not aesthetic - then it is worth pursing.
